Today, mother told me that things could start being better for us now that the third Estate or as she says, “97% of the country”, has declared itself a “National Assembly” and will represent all of us lower class people. I don’t know how this will help us, for I fear that the tension cannot decrease even if we are represented. As a matter of fact, I fear the tension will build due to the National Assembly’s choice to move forward without joining with the first Estate and second Estate. I do wish that we could work this out, even though I am extremely angered by the King and his wife. Poor Remi Gusteau, the baker who I have grown so fond. For these past few days and weeks, he has been able to sell hardly any bread. Almost all the time, the only customers at his bakery are the nobles of the town! They hardly stop by though. It’s just me and him on the few days that I do visit. He does not deserve any of this at all. So kind and sweet, Remi deserves the best. With barely any customers at his bakery, I often like to stop by and buy a small portion of bread when I can, just to see his worn face smile. I can tell he is worn out by this revolution already, when it is almost just the beginning. I can also tell he resents the monarchy. Yet is isn’t just him. Everyone around me has been like this lately. I’m sure as a baker, it impacts him the most, but my family is just suffering too much lately. Sure, we may deliver and make clothes for the nobles, but even the nobles don’t seem so into buying from us peasants anymore.. Thomas is sick with the flu and we can’t even afford a doctor for him and barely have medicine left. I worry.. The only thing I can do for him right now is pray and take care of him. If only the King and his wife would be so kind to lower the taxes and perhaps stop spending all of their money on beautiful extravagant things, as I heard from the townspeople. Someone even told me earlier today that the Queen was known to have a necklace worth 1,600,000 livres! 1,600,000 livres. With that money, everyone in the Third Estate would have more than enough to eat and survive on! I do hope that this revolution will give the best to us and perhaps make things fair and better for us.
